Frost Protectors / Pond Heaters
Frost is not going to harm most pond inhabitants but a prolonged cold spell can cause real pond problems. What will cause considerable problems is if the pond ices over for more than a couple of hours. The supply of oxygen to the water will be reduced and the gases produced within the pond by decaying organic matter will not be able to dissipate. They will build up under the ice, raising the pressure and poisoining the aquatic life. It is very important that these gases can escape , keeping one area of pond free of ice will save the pond from 'crashing'.
Although there are number of ways of keeping an area ice free, one of the most trouble free and reliable is a pond heater. The name is slightly misleading as the unit will not heat an entire pond, it will keep a small area keep clear of ice, which is enough to stave off a complete ice over. It is strongly advisable to have a pond heater on a timer or light sensitive switch.
