Electronic Blanket Weed Controllers Blanket weed (Spirogyra) is a fast growing filamentous algae that thrives in clear water ponds, high in nutrients. it forms a strong or soft, matted growth that could resemble green cotton wool or wire cool. It is not only unsightly but can block and damage pond pumps and pond filters. Of more immediate concern is that algae will use up oxygen overnight - too much algae will result in too little oxygen, which will have an adverse effect on all aquatic life. The growth of blanket weed is dependent on the correct form of calcium being available for it to form its cell structure. The electronic blanket weed controller destabilizes the balance of calcium in the water which makes the algae strive to grow faster, this weakens the algae strive to grow faster, this weakens the algae and can eliminate blanket weed in some ponds. The pond's water quality has to be reasonably balanced for an electronic controller to work, it will not be able to make a big difference if the pond is saturated with nitrates or the pH is too high but it can make a very real contribution in a well managed pond.
