Every species of fish will have evolved a specialised digestive system to consume a particular range of feed items. Many species may even be classified by their dietary requirements. Fish that consume mainly plant based material are known as herbivores and have evolved a long and complex digestive tract that enables them to break down the hard to digest plant material. Predatory fish, known as carnivores, have evolved a shorter digestive tract that is able to break down the animal based proteins that make up the majority of their diet. Other fish have evolved a digestive tract that is capable of breaking down both animal proteins and plant material.
